July MVSNA Meet & Greet

Greetings all, summer is in full swing and there are many exciting things going on!

The next MVSNA meeting will be Tuesday July 20th, 7:30pm, at the Yale Loft Condo, 437 New York Ave NW.  The agenda is seasonally light so we shall see if we can't rustle up some wine & refreshments so neighbors can enjoyably meet & greet.

The following week on Tuesday, July 27th, CCCA will likely have a discussion regarding parcel 42, a sizable lot at 7th & R which recently sprung a good old fashioned tent protest a la the Bonus Army.  Please note their probable alternate meeting location - from CCCA prez Martin Moulton:

Ketan Gada and his team will be at the next CCCA meeting to discuss Parcel 42 and the matter-of-right development that's apparently just about ready to begin its plans for the site. The July 27 CCCA meeting will likely be held at the soon to open Beau Thai Restaurant ( pending floors being finished ) at New Jersey Ave & R Street NW.

Tuesday August 3rd is National Night Out.  In addition to the main MPD events (http://mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,a,1242,Q,547053,mpdcNav_ GID,1541,mpdcNav,%7C,.asp) there will be various local safety walks & neighborhood gatherings.  Stay tuned to the lifein.mvsna.org blog and the listserves as we will be posting events.

ANC, Police, & community group meetings typically break for August but that doesn't mean the fun stops.  In addition to various political theater as campaigns move into high gear, we have much more going on.

The Fringe festival ends July 25th, catch a local performance while you still can! http://www.capfringe.org/

Every Sunday in August, The Five Eye Film Festival will be going on at the lot at 5th & I Streets NW 8:30pm.  5 Sundays, 5 awesome Asian movies.  Its going to be so much FUN! for full details check out:

Primal Fitness Open House

This weekend, on Saturday 5-15-10, we'll be holding an open house at Primal DC at 219 M St. NW, in the old fire-house. We want to reach out and get together both the friends and family of our current clients, and those from the neighborhood who would like to see what we do here at Primal Fitness. We have a great community here, so this event should very fun! All of our classes throughout the day will be free and will be designed with both novice and intermediate trainees in mind so that anybody interested can drop in and see what we're all about.

Starting a 8:30 AM we'll be serving coffee and other refreshments before our 9-10AM Primal Crossfit group class. This will be a great opportunity to come try one of our great Primal Fitness workouts, the most fun and effective workout in DC!

From 10-11AM and from 11AM-12PM we'll run individual sessions focusing on basic Parkour training combined with our patented Primal Fitness conditioning. These sessions will be set up with new people in mind, and will be a great introduction to the conditioning and techniques involved in Parkour, which teaches you how to quickly navigate obstacles in the urban environment with vaults, climbing, rolls and the like.

From 12-2PM we'll fire up the grill and have burgers, dogs and various side-dishes available for everybody in attendence. During this time we'll also be giving away some great Primal apparel and assorted gear, as well as some coupons for free training!

From 1-2PM our Parkour bootcamp will be open for observation, so you will have an opportunity to see our Parkour training methods and observe our bootcampers during their final class of their 6 week session.

Hope we see you there!

5th and N Market is Back

There is a new owner of the 5th and N Market.  Next time you pass by, stop in and say hi to Ronny (yes, we now have Ronnys operating stores on both corners of the 1200 Block of 5th Street NW).

As you may know, Joe and Duck Cho left the store around November of 2009 and the store was only open sporadically in the preceding months.  Ronny is in the process of cleaning up and reorganizing the store.  He expects to be fully up and running soon.

More to come on his future plans.  Perhaps we'll do a profile of Mount Vernon Square's newest business owner on the blog in the near future.

Liberty Farmers Market closed indefinitely after police(?) "raid"

Dear Councilmembers Evans and Wells,

I hope you will work with the local community and local merchants to help enliven our outdoor areas with farmers markets and help overcome the hurdles that let to the closure of the Liberty Farmers Market at Mt Vernon Square. In one of my last conversations with the late Miles Groves, in his home downtown, he expressed as he did many times, that it was his dream to create more lively, safe, family oriented spaces downtown and particularly at the Carnegie Library on Mt Vernon Square.
Residents enjoy farmers markets. Through the WIC program, farmers markets can also help to bring affordable, fresh and locally grown produce to area residents, who — as our nation's First Lady, Michelle Obama, has noted, need to have more access to healthy foods for a variety of health reasons. We have more merchants who sell nothing but junk food, lottery tickets and beer and alcohol that do nothing but undermine the lives of lower income residents. I don't necessarily want to see those business face greater hardship in these economic times, but we need to balance the playing field in favor of businesses that strengthen our communities from the ground up.
A market at Mt Vernon Square was also one of the few amenities in the vicinity of the Walter E Washington Convention Center for its thousands of visitors who have little to turn to in the Shaw community aside from blighted properties. This is certainly the way to welcome guests to the world class facility in the heart of the Nation's Capital.
I'm saddened and very surprised, in this instance that a "raid" was even necessary w/o just informing the principal operators by letter. We have drug dealers openly operating their "businesses" in the community with less enforcement from MPD and also owners of vacant, blighted, nuisance properties that have less to fear from our government.
Mr Evans, I hope you will have an update on this issue and what you can do to help farmers markets find a place in our local communities, when you speak at the Mt Vernon Square Neighborhood Association meeting tomorrow evening.
Thank you,
Martin Moulton
WASHINGTON, DC--Liberty Farmers Market, which opened Tuesdays last fall on the grounds of the Historical Society of Washington, DC (HSW) at Mount Vernon Square near the corner of 7th & K Sts. NW, has "been suspended indefinitely" after being raided and closed down by D. C. Government when it reopened for the season Tuesday, March 9. The suspension was announced today by Michael Berman, president of Diverse Markets Management (DMM), a D.C. firm contracted by HSW to manage the market. "We're disappointed that the effort to create quality markets at the location has been at least temporarily derailed," said Berman, who noted that the site had housed a market in the 19th Century before the building of the Carnegie Library, which now houses HSW. He said the raid involved both federal park and local police and the D.C. Department of Regulatory and Consumer Affairs, which cited permitting issues for the closure. "DMM tried to work through the issues this week but ran into a complicated maze of jurisdictional overlap," Berman said. "Unfortunately the mess will probably also derail plans to open other open air markets both at HSW and in other city neighborhoods," Berman lamented. "But we know neighborhoods want to start outdoor markets and vendors want additional locations, so we'll continue to try to work with the City."

Empowerment Zones

Sometimes I go off on tangents while doing taxes and start reading all kinds of IRS publications...but this caught my eye.  take it with a grain of salt as I am no expert and not a CPA - consult a professional:  Did you know that the Mount Vernon Triangle is an enterprise zone?  For tax purposes (check out form 8844) certain 2000 census tract sections of DC with 20%+ poverty (page 11) are classified as Empowerment Zones.  Why is this important?  well if you have a business in the Triangle (or one of the other sections) and you employ DC residents (who live anywhere in DC), you may qualify for a big tax credit - up to 15k per employee if i am reading that right.  There are also other benefits, like some sort of tax exempt financing and increased section 179 deduction.  this is part of form 3800 General business credit.  I hope all of the new & exisiting Triangle businesses know about this, its pretty neato.  but it wont last for long...this year is census year and its pretty evident that the demographics downtown have been severely altered.  One more thing, if you look at the map, PQ & parts of Shaw are included.

ANC 6C p&z Update

First the FANTASTIC news that Mandu is coming to the space next to Kushi in City Vista!!! This means KOREAN BBQ in the hood!! (Mandu has a current restaurant at 18th & S) Ok now that I've finished my happy dance, the meat n potatoes...

The Stuearts are coming soon so they promise.  The committee voted to support their zoning appeal which was hugely confusing but in a nutshell they want to build: a 400 unit residential building on the 400 block of NY Ave/L and a commercial/retail building on the 500 block of NY/K.  the appeal has to do with transferring residential sq footage and the confusing nature of the zoning code, bonus densities and all sorts of crazy things that made even me (who normally geeks out to this stuff) utterly cross eyed.  check out Rob's explanation from the meeting announcement post below, he does a much better job.  Anyhoo if they dont get their way, they will "re-examine the project" which could very well mean parking lot for all eternity.  They arent seeking to do 100% office so thats really good that they are embracing mixing it up.  No concepts as of yet.

One of the committee members gave em some hell for their crappy nonexistant snow removal for all of their properties during the blizzards.  I also tried to convey that it was also the issues with weeds, trash, hookers etc plus the semi recent murder on their property that the neighborhood has a problem with.  And of course the long history of silence from them which we would like to change.  So I asked them to come visit us in April or May which they were amenable to, and we look forward to dialog with this major Triangle landowner.

also got a look at NPR's new building on North Capitol, It looks pretty neat but imho teeters on brutalism.  Its hard to tell but it could be really neat.  They are also toying with the idea of putting a giant light saber or flagpole or somebig red stick thing on the corner of L.  Will be interesting to see what that turns out to be.

The committee also discussed some things pertaining to the new comprehensive plan but I had to bug out 20 min into that.  I do have to say that Rob Amos is doing an absolutely fantastic job chairing this committee!  They are a very knowlegable bunch and he leads them in a well and even tempered manner.  y'all should check out this meeting on occasion, very interesting content.
