CityPaper Housing Complex: Good news for Gibson Plaza

Gibson Plaza Groundbreaking July 28, Glimmer of Hope for Kelsey Gardens?

The future Gibson Plaza.

The future Gibson Plaza.

In the last few months, it’s seemed that the ice floes have started to crack and shift for development in Shaw: Project after project has broken financing deadlocks and will see shovels in the ground this year. Add another to the list: Gibson Plaza, the 10-story public housing behemoth on 7th and O Street NW, which will be getting a massive gut retrofit to upgrade its 217 affordable units, starting June 28th. The improvements, paid for by the federal department of Housing and Urban Development, cover a complete facade upgrade, all new green appliances, plumbing and electrical systems, new windows, and “cultured marble vanity tops” in bathrooms.

MVS afficionado wants back in!

 Hello everyone,

I'm a former resident of Mount Vernon Square who absolutely LOVED the neighborhood...and want to come back!  I'm posting this message on the off-chance that someone would have accommodation available for short-term, through the end of August and starting soon, preferably immediately.  As a graduate student my income is rather limited, but I am open to many living situations.  If you are interested or have any suggestions please email me, Andy, at ballard.andy@gmail.com or comment to this blog.

Thanks for your consideration and I hope to be back in the neighborhood soon!

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), DC Creates! Public Art Program would like to invite you to participate in our “Pop-Up Public Art Project” on a donated plot of land at 3rd and H Street, NE is a partnership initiative between DCCAH, the DC Office of Planning and the H Street BID to activate “Interactive H Street”. This initiative will establish a 14-block creative corridor along H Street NE, creating a framework for civic innovation; activation of dormant real estate; and creative business incubation. This project will make a critical contribution toward H Street becoming a destination for arts, business and community experiences in city design.
“Interactive H Street” is inspired by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Mayors’ Institute on City Design (MICD). MICD has helped transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designs for their cities. MICD mayors know that the arts and culture contribute greatly as core components in building livable and sustainable communities. Cities across the country create diverse projects through the support of the MICD program. Projects include planning, design, and arts engagement.

Advisory Panelists
The DC Arts Commission is currently seeking nominations for Advisory Panelists to make funding recommendations for its programs. Artists, administrators, educators and critics in the arts with at least a two year history of involvement in the District's arts community are eligible for nomination. Panelists are appointed for a one year term and may be reappointed for up to three consecutive years, for a maximum of four years. The rotation of advisory panel members ensures that each year will bring varying perspectives to the application review process. Panelists serve on a voluntary basis. Individuals will not be allowed to serve as panelists for programs in which they are applicants.
If you would like to be considered for panelist opportunities, please complete the Advisory Panelist Nomination Form and attach a current copy of your resume. The nomination form includes additional information about the panel process and eligibility requirements. Individuals may self-nominate. Nominations are reviewed periodically throughout the year.

Does anyone know where I can donate used winter coats? I'm moving at the end of July and I am cleaning out my closet.

I know it's not really the coat-drive season...
