Gibson Plaza Groundbreaking July 28, Glimmer of Hope for Kelsey Gardens?
In the last few months, it’s seemed that the ice floes have started to crack and shift for development in Shaw: Project after project has broken financing deadlocks and will see shovels in the ground this year. Add another to the list: Gibson Plaza, the 10-story public housing behemoth on 7th and O Street NW, which will be getting a massive gut retrofit to upgrade its 217 affordable units, starting June 28th. The improvements, paid for by the federal department of Housing and Urban Development, cover a complete facade upgrade, all new green appliances, plumbing and electrical systems, new windows, and “cultured marble vanity tops” in bathrooms.
Hello everyone,
I'm a former resident of Mount Vernon Square who absolutely LOVED the neighborhood...and want to come back! I'm posting this message on the off-chance that someone would have accommodation available for short-term, through the end of August and starting soon, preferably immediately. As a graduate student my income is rather limited, but I am open to many living situations. If you are interested or have any suggestions please email me, Andy, at ballard.andy@gmail.com or comment to this blog.
Thanks for your consideration and I hope to be back in the neighborhood soon!
Do you want to set up a recycling program at your workplace or office? The DC Chapter of the Sierra Club has started a new project to assist local businesses set up or improve existing recycling programs. Sierra Club volunteers can help set up an on-site program, find recycling haulers, and educate staff. We are currently trying to spread the word about the new project.
If you are interested in participating or know of any businesses that may be interested, please contact Monica at tierney9x@gmail.com. There is no cost to participate – just your enthusiasm for making DC Green!
Fringe Festival
It's time for the annual Capital Fringe Festival again, and for those of you who don't know, the heart of it is right here in Mt. Vernon Square. There are over 100 plays in 14 venues, all within easy walking distance. http://capfringe.org/
HANDBOOK FOR HOSTS
Shaw's own "avant pop" performance company, Banished? Productions (A Tactile Dinner; Desire Caught by the Tail) will be represented at the Fringe again with Handbook for Hosts, based loosely on the 1949 Esquire manual (a collaboration with the outstanding comedy troupe Happenstance Theater). Starts Friday. $15 tickets
Summer is in full swing over at Northwest One Neighborhood Library. We have weekly crafts, story time, films and more happening all month. There are five more summer reading performers coming by too - including the Washington National Opera and lots of wildlife animals! Check out www.dclibrary.org/northwest for program information.
Make sure to come by and check out our neighbors across the hall - the RH Terrell Recreation Center - now open!
We are also partnering up with the North Capitol Collaborative to host two sessions of Teen Financial Literacy Seminars. Here is more information on that:
Know any local 16-21 year old who could use some money this summer? They can sign up for the Financial Literacy for Teens Workshop Series and learn all about saving and managing your money. A free dinner is included with each workshop and a $200 savings account stipend from SunTrust Bank at the completion of the series. Donating Coats
Does anyone know where I can donate used winter coats? I'm moving at the end of July and I am cleaning out my closet.
I know it's not really the coat-drive season...
