“Tracks”
Pete McCutchen

Opening Reception:

Friday, March 2, 6 - 8:30pm

Pete McCutchen’s show, Tracks, marries elegant and vibrant colors, and then gives it a Pop-Art inspired twist. “I decontextualize,” says McCutchen, describing his approach to photography.  In this case, he has isolated the lines of roller coaster track against a clear sky, playing with line, form, composition, and -- in particular -- color.

Enhancing the vibrancy of his colors, they make a bold, powerful, upbeat statement.  In some cases, he has radically altered the color -- making the sky purple, or pink.  “My goal is to take a mundane object -- in this case a roller coaster -- and to give it new life.  And I want to have fun.  I’m utterly serious about putting up the best work I can, but I hope the show has a playful feel to it.”

This body of work has never been shown as a whole before, but Pete McCutchen has been working with these images for some time.  In fact, several of them were a part of the portfolio he used to jury in to the Torpedo Factory Art Center, in 2010.  And they are important to him for another reason as well: it was with these images that he began his current approach to photography.

“Right now,” says McCutchen, “nearly all of my work involves taking things out of context.  The ‘subject’ is immaterial -- it can be a pattern of rust on a decayed surface, a skyscraper, an old car.  Anything.  What I will do is look for a compositional element, which I will then isolate.  That began with the Tracks.”

Bold, bright, and original, McCutchen’s Tracks is not to be missed.
