Does anyone know what is happening with the very large tree behind the new houses under construction at 4th and N? It looked like they had to cut it back to make room for the new homes, which makes sense, but looking at it last night, it appears it has been cut back even more on the alley side. Are there plans to remove the tree entirely? I understand it is on someone's private property, but it would be ashame since it is such a beautiful large mature tree that appears really healthy.
Thanks.

will inquire with the developer and also report To DDOT, ward 2 Mayor's reps Christine.kidwell(aT)dc.gov & francisco.fimbres(AT)dc.gov. there are regulations, you cant cut down a tree with 44+ inch circumference without permit.

Developer reports they definitely intend to keep the tree. DDOT went out to inspect, fast work!

Thanks for the info. That was fast. It just looked a little odd on Tuesday night the way it had been trimmed back, but glad we got the confirmation that it is staying.

When cutting the footprint for the condos, the condo construction sheared off the roots of the tree, which is adjacent to the yard the tree is growing in. I know some people have seen it, it was mentioned in this blog. After talking to a few tree experts, I found out this will cause the tree to die in a few years or less. The developer is not planning on dealing with this problem right now because it is cheaper to only do minor trimming and you have to get a permit, as mentioned, which means more money and time.
This will eventually have to be taken care of, and my prediction is it will be a tricky situation. The roots were on the property of the condos so I believe it was the right of the developer to cut them off. But if this causes the tree to die, whose responsibility is that? Tree law appears to be very complicated and I am a little concerned with the day coming someone has to deal with that thing falling on their house or condo.

the developer has been very responsive. Hopefully the tree will make it but if it does not we have plenty of neighbors who will insure its safe removal (and replacement) so no property or people get hurt. I do know their plans also called for ample landscaping s hopefully that will also include the planting of more trees (and their maintenance)
