You are invited to a milestone day in the history of the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, D.C.: our first legally recognized same-sex wedding. We are pleased to announce that church members Will Knicely and Bob Whitman will be married in this Ceremony of Holy Matrimony at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary followed by a reception provided by our Couples Ministry.
The service will be co-officiated by Rev. Elder Darlene Garner, an international official with the Metropolitan Community churches, and by the Rev. Dwayne Johnson, Senior Pastor of MCC-DC. Minister of Music, Shirli Hughes and the Music Ministry will provide memorable music, including "There's More Love Somewhere" and 'My Light, My Love."
At Metropolitan Community Church we believe that love is a mystery, that relationship is a gift, and that legal marriage is both a gift and right. Marriage is a gift and right that in the past has been denied to all people. This Sunday at 1:00 pm we will open that gift. Our love is free.
As we celebrate the new same-sex marriage law in the District of Columbia, we recognize that MCC-DC has been honoring loving, committed relationships through ceremonies since our founding in May of 1971. Through the years, many couples chose to self-define their ceremony as a wedding, while others chose such terms as "Holy Union," "Blessing of Relationship," or "Commitment Ceremony." We will continue to encourage people to choose the terminology that is right for them. All of these ceremonies were and are valid in God's eyes. It is a joy to celebrate that the District of Columbia now recognizes what we have always recognized.
You will not want to miss this historic and sacred moment, to be remembered forever.
