Arboretum: Hidden Treasure

Just a five minute drive from Mount Vernon Square lies the National Arboretum.  Just drive east down New York Avenue and get into the service lane before the Washington Times building.

After more than a decade of living in DC, I finally made it down last month. It was a perfect day and I was surprised to find the place was practically empty.

Even more surprising is what we found inside.  What a treasure.  I highly recommend taking a day to walk around or even just bringing your lunch down to sit by the carp pond.  Here are a few photos.

love love love the arboretum! and its not too far of a bike ride:) Mid spring is incredible too with the flowering trees & the azaleas in bloom. Try also, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens...anyone know if the lilies are still blossoming?

I'd be remiss if i didnt point out that the US botanic garden is an easy stroll from our area, located right by the US Capitol. I had the pleasure of biking there today and the outdoor expansion has really filled in. The plantings are soooo lush. Coleus in every possible variation, black elephant ears, cannas twice my height, & orange kangaroo paws! and thats just the front yard. they also do free lectures (that fill up fast).

The arboretum is fantastic, and it always amazes me how many DC residents don't know about it.
It's well worth returning at different seasons. The website has a listing of what's in bloom when. (The azaleas are a huge draw each year, and the cherries are worth a visit, too.)
Also, make sure to check out their astounding bonsai collection.
