Signs of Progress

In May, MVSNA began its push for enforcement of the District's billboard moratorium, sending a letter to the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) requesting that it take action with respect to several blatantly illegal billboards located on a closed used car lot, a vacant lot, and the side of a liquor store, as well as the large billboards at New Jersey Avenue and P Street NW and several others in the area. In response, we were pleased that DCRA announced that it would take an inventory of the billboards, determine which are properly permitted and which are illegal, and begin enforcement -- at least against those where there is no question of a violation. The Examiner covered the story, include the challenge of enforcement for DCRA given the lack of records.
Recently, I noticed the first evidence of DCRA stepping up, with the removal of the two billboards from the vacant lot on the corner of 9th and L Streets NW. Thank you, DCRA. I hope that more is to come.
