Akosombo

Has anyone eaten at Akosombo? My friend found the review on Yelp and asked me about it and I told her in all my years walking down K street, i've noticed a restaurant there....

Its on K street, between 7th and 6th, I think. Ghanaian food.

Here is  the yelp review for anyone interested....sounds like a hole-in-the-wall worth eating at

I have walked by one million times and never knew what that was. to be honest, i thought it might be an Islamic house of worship or something, given the ornate detailing on the outside. thanks for bringing this to my attention - i will try it out soon.

Here's the storefront: http://tiny.cc/9jFkB I think the building Emily's thinking of is a different one. There is nothing ornate about this place.

You can usually spot it by the proliferation of empty taxi cabs parked out front. When you walk in you're greeted with a water cooler in one corner and a steam table in the other. The lighting is fluorescent. The TV...very loud CNN. You wait until someone comes out from the back and takes your order, which is best accomplished by pointing at what looks good.

While a lot of it looks and sounds good, it only tastes okay. The chicken and lamb dishes are little more than bones swimming in admittedly flavorful sauce. The rice and the peanut soup are good too, but I found myself filling up on fufu (this doughy mass of...dough) dipped in the soup and sauces because the meat was virtually nonexistent. While you get a fair amount of food for $15, the quality just isn't worth it. I love holes-in-walls as much as anyone, but this isn't the MVS neighborhood gem we're looking for.

from a Ghanaian friend: "Lol it's been around for ages. Rather hole in the wall kinda spot though." he also recommended Bukom. I noticed the other day Ghana Cafe is reopening soon around 14th & P. Time to try some fufus & red reds & killiwilli?
