It's like stepping into wonderland ... everyone is smiling, eager to help you, free tasty samples. They have everything, seafood, cheese, huge wine selection, fresh breads, deli, desserts, hand cranked ice cream (joking). It's a great feeling of relief to have them finally open in our neighborhood.

Totally agree Sara! I just posted my photos to Flickr:

Not only is the wine selection huge - they plan to staff a wine steward.

Wonderful thing for the neighborhood. I wish we could have more good news versus the bad.
How about that vinyl wood floor, Rog? :O)

The prices are great.
I almost shed a tear of joy sampling the free items being served up. It was like winning the lotto.
Giant is really going to need to step things up.

Does anybody know the hours? I would be shocked, but delighted if it was open 24/7

Perfect timing -- now that the campaign is over -- I have a bit of shopping to catch up on. I'm going to spend a day there this weekend and it won't be handing out fliers!

Picture of Fenty at today's ribbon cutting:

Tommy Wells didn't attend today but was at the ribbon cutting for the pre-opening yesterday. I didn't have close enough positioning to snap that photo.

All that is missing is the toy train running above the dairy section, a la Wegmans.

i went last night...the selection is great! and their selection of organic products was adequate. i'll probably still need to run to wholefoods now and then for specific items, but i don't intend on going back to giants anytime soon! Yay!

I don't think many people are planning on ever going back to that Giant. Who will miss those lines that snake back to the department of relabeled meats?

Ok, just returned from the Safeway. the bakery has interesting bread for $3.49 a loaf. My first reaction was...i've been in this village since 1988 it's just an incredible feeling to have this huge store across the street.
i did notice that you do get 25 seconds to cross the intersection and the cars leaving town are NOT use to allowing people the right of way crossing the street.
the isles are wide and generous when compared to the sardine can store at 17th and corcoran.
i ran into people i haven't seen since 1990.
and nicholas...whomever from safeway headquarters in oakland who told me the story about the wooden floors is a dayum liar. HA.

They also have a staffed "nut bar" ... an incredible selection of roasted, shelled, blanched, salted nuts. And the smell of roasted nuts is amazing. I have yet to see a store outside of seaside boardwalks that have these.

Loose leaf tea ... unfortunately, safeway doesn't have this. But my husband put in a request, (they were so so polite about this too!). If other tea loves would please request loose leaf teas, that would be helpful. Thanks.

Do they sell rolly carts? It will be so nice not to have to use a car to go shopping. If not, maybe Logan Hardware has one. All in one shopping right here in Mount Vernon. I still have my doubts as to whether it is possible to cross New York Avenue with shopping cart full of groceries given the light timing.

Fifth Street Hardware had the carts as of yesterday. There may be such a mad run on them this weekend they might sell out!

I would really like to purchase one of those new Safeway shopping carts with the two tier baskets. And i could use it in the house as well. :-) Does anyone know the discounted price? Patrick Mara was there 30 minutes ago saying hello to shoppers. I went to the Giant for the last time yesterday; being inside the Giant felt like a prison.

Just got back from my trip to the new City Safeway and it certainly surpasses any expectations for a grocery store in our neighborhood. Excellent, well-staffed and knowledgeable service deli, good selection of wines. The aisles are a little narrow but I'll put up with that for the selection of items offered.
There is NO reason at all to return to the Giant.
Now as soon as I get my Harris Teeter a few blocks away at First/M NE, I'll be fat and happy!
BTW, Logan Hardware is giving a 5% discount in their store if you show a Safeway receipt. And they still had a few shopping carts left at 1:00 pm today as well.

A friend of a neighbor won an ipod AND $1000 Friday at Safeway. Safeway must want ALL of Giant's customers. : ) Why did Giant take so long to start sending out $7 coupons like I got in the mail today? Too little too late. They knew what was coming, but didn't care. Serves them right. Now there will be fewer lines and fewer people at Giant.
If Giant sends me a free iPod Touch, I'll shop there again. Really.

A friend and I went to Vegetate for dinner last night and noticed that the Giant parking lot was pretty empty .. more so than a typical Saturday evening. I went back to Safeway this morning to pick up a few more things and it was hopping!
