Moving to the neighborhood

Hi,

I'm moving to the neighborhood to N street in the mid 400s.  I've been driving and walking around during the day and nights to check out the area.  Looks pretty safe from what I can tell.  However, I'm a recent transplant from Boston still learning about the city.  Any words of wisdom as in what areas to stay away from?

Thanks,
Chris

Actually the area you are moving to has been like a warzone the past couple of weeks.

I used to live on the 400 block of N Street and I had no issues. I only moved because my landlord was getting foreclosed on (and I moved to the 1200 block of New Jersey and recenty bought a house on Ridge, so I am kinda addicted to the neighborhood). I would watch for the following:

1. If you have a back gate, keep it locked and/or have a light in your back yard. The alley can be sketchy at night.
2. Sometimes there are groups of kids hanging out at 5th and N. I haven't had any problems with them, but some folks get concerned about that corner.
3. Get a large dog - I have one and no one bothers me when I am out walking her :-)
4. The N Street side of the co-ops was usually pretty quiet. Also, I didn't have issues with anyone along N Street or on Ridge Street.
5. Be careful if you walk down N Street to the west. N between 6th and 9th can be sketchy.
6. In general, keep your eyes and ears open as you walk around the neighborhood. Don't wear headphones and don't have long conversations on your cell phone. Keep alert to your surroundings. Anything can happen anywhere.

we use to be able to have a sense of humor in this country, what happened? maureen dowd is correct. now, the PC police will bust you in advance without cause.

the 400 block of N street has improved more on the southside than on the northside. i'll have to go over friday night and walk the block at 8 pm and report back to y'all.

Thanks for all the comments and I have been reading about current incidents...and recent gun fire.

John - My thoughts exactly about heading North and West of N Street...won't be going there. Currently staying over on L street and really try to stay away going North in between the convention center and the Giant Food Market. Can't wait for the new Safeway to open.

Richard - Thanks!

remember that notorious Barry quote about DC being safe - except for the murders? Its kinda like that (except for the gunfire.) I dont feel uncomfortable walking in any direction in Shaw but the situation is just downright bizaare. Despite this CK you will love the neighborhood & yak about it incessantly like the rest of us:)

Welcome CK. Glad to have someone else on my square (513) that will help make it better.

I'll be living at 442 and definitely will be a good neighbor - I like to be a part of the community where I live. And I have to say its pretty cool that a neighborhood blog like this exists. So many times something happens in the neighborhood where you live and you hear nothing until it shows up in the paper. That doesn't seem to be the case for here.

I also have a question about moving - I'm thinking of moving to the 1400 block of 5th St, which I know is near 5th and O (apparently a hot zone). I'm a single woman, so I want to know if this is a good idea, or entirely insane. Any thoughts?
