Shooting, 10-15 Rounds

There was just a shooting at the 2nd NW Coop (source of many problems lately). Two males (dark complexions) wearing red shorts and head coverings fired two medium calibre silver guns at an unknown target.  The two males fled across (SB) N Street NW, down (SB) on 4th Street NW, past the house at 1230 4th Street NW, and then to Ridge Street NW.

There are a lot of police on scene, no additional information.

Did ShotSpotter work?  Response time was a bit slow for such a bold day time move.

911 dispatcher got Ridge and Riggs confused... again.

The police chased 2 individuals to 4th & M where they are curently detained. They recovered weapons discarded in LG's yard. 1 man was grazed by a bullet. Officers were at 5th & N and heard the shots, they responded very quickly. Awesome job by 308 officers.

The neighborhood is turning into a warzone lately. What the heck is going on?

We, sadly, have some young men living in our area that have nothing to live for.

while dashing around the corner to help a neighbor i ran into jack and thorpe at 5th and L. thrope spoke to me but i made the sign of the cross and flashed it at him. is there a fundraiser tonight somewhere in the hood? between the dice player being shot to death and the shooting at 2nd NW isn't it nice to get some attention from our council member? i'd say say and told him it was nice to see him.

I just saw Windy at the corner of 5th and M with a whole handful of Jack yard signs. So they must be doing some campaign event in the neighborhood. I'll bet Jack can't wait to get back to Georgetown and take a shower.

Amen @ the shower comment.

He probably sighs in relief as he crosses 25th Street. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I'm back out of the animal neighborhood."

I wonder if some of his ways would change if he spent a week living with the real people?

Jack walks w/Thorpe once a year. That was the night.
"We, sadly, have some young men living in our area that have nothing to live for. "
Sure they do. But who's teaching them that? The Red Hats?

While reading this blog,I'm very DISGUSTED at what I am seeing.I mean is this really what 'you people' think of us?All I have to say is,''Welcome to OUR world!''Its funny how you guys just swarmed into these 'hoods',without doing any research about these neighborhoods. This crime is NOTHING new and for some its all they know. Now by no means, does that make it right, but sitting in your half-million dollar condos, blogging about the gangsters and thugs on the 'block' isn't doing anything to help our community.I'm glad someone finds all of this funny.Because I most certainly do not.Its a shame that I'm only 17 years old with way more sense than you SIMPLETONS!!!

I'm not sure that anybody finds shootings funny. Am I missing something? Yeah, I know it's nothing new, having lived in the neighborhood for several years. But it's also not something that people should just accept as normal. Nobody should have to live in fear of crime. The only way it's going to change is for people to call the police whenever they see crimes, and to have a bit of courage and tell the police who is committing crimes if they know something, instead of just keeping their mouths shut as happens all too often. Because nobody talks, kids in this neighborhood can literally get away with murder, and they know it.

Ekkh, what is this person and from where did it come?

And, like the mother of Patsy Stone said, "TAKE IT AWAY!"

When I heard the first shot, I thought for sure it was a firecracker in the middle of the day. By the third I knew it was gunfire and by the fifth, I was on the telephone with the police giving physical descriptions and the directions for which the assailants had run. I have lived in urban areas for most of my life and the refusal to get involved has never been about anything more than self preservation, particularly in DC, where until recently, I was not allowed to own a firearm to protect myself in my home. Maturity and refusal to become a hostage in my home or community have made me less reluctant to report crimes in progress and less tolerant of criminal activity. But, not being a native of this city or immediate community also allows me to do that without severe fear of retribution. I don't have a mother or grandmother here that may face retaliation for my "snitching". Although I know one man's snitching is another man's civic duty. People who have lived here during the more difficult times have good reason to be concerned about getting involved, as do all of us. I will call from the privacy of my home, but will not under any circumstances converse with an officer in plain view. I want a better environment, but not at the risk of my personal safety. And there is the rub.

For over a year I have called the police for a variety of crimes and not in one instance have they ever arrived in time to catch the perps. Not once! But I continue with the hope that one day it will happen and send a message.

What I gathered from the young lady's post (Chastity) is the perceived insensitivity and categorization of many members of our community. I've been witness to many of the neighborhood's us vs. them conversations, particularly where the 2nd NW Coop is concerned. I don't know the details, but I was pleased to see so many people from that development out and talking to the police the morning of the shooting, they were obviously more courageous that I was, with my "concerned citizen" telephone call. That morning I realized that the people in that development are probably as tired of the crime as we are and the overwhelming majority cannot possibly be involved in it or living in this area would be unbearable for all of us. They are victims as we are. We are neighbors and need to act like it. Yes, there are people in this community in 1/2 million dollar condos, and its unlikely that it was handed to any of them, sacrifices and hard work put them in a position to afford such. Yes, there are lower income people living in subsidized housing that at this point in life haven't figured out how to make it to the next level in financial stability AND many in between. SO THE HELL WHAT!!!! Do those bullets that fly back and forth give a damn? No! Can we please be more productive as a community to address and affect change? We have reduced one another to nothing more than gentrifiers and low-income hooligan supporters. Give me a break! There was more concern given to an abandoned puppy the other day than the people that were outside when shots rang out. And that is the divisive spirit that allows crime to flourish, as partners, we really could eradicate this situation.
