I hope that the MVSNA is not considering moving forward with support for the NY Avenue Playground project. It is obvious from the dialog on the email group that most neighbors DO NOT support this project. It is also clear that there is a BRAND NEW REC CENTER currently being built directly across the street from this and a Boys and Girls Club already exists, also directly across the street from this. The green space should not be demolished to build yet a third rec. center in a 500 foot radius. The time and money dedicated to this project could be better spent on mentoring activities, books, etc. for the children. It appears from the meeting notes that MVSNA is considering supporting this abandonment of green space in the historic district:
C: There will likely be large opposition to taking any green space away. Similar to what happened a few years ago when the idea that Sorsum Corda would be displaced onto that park. There are also parking concerns.
A: We want to work with all neighbors to make sure we incorporate everyone’s feedback. (Si's note: Joyce was reluctant to build on any green space as well, having been a part of the neighborhood effort to stop plans to build housing on the existing field. She was very open to solutions that would avoid taking any green space yet provide a wide array of services in a proposed facility. She is trying to facilitate community dialog in this respect.)
C: Perhaps the library, since a new one will soon be opened across NY Ave, could go to DPR and could then be used in place of building on existing green space.

Another recreation center! How many do we need in a 2 block radius? Lets see there will be one across the road in the new Sursum Corda development, the project on Morgan {site of the CVS training], a half -block from the playground, is suppose to have some sort of community space and the 3rd St Church of God operates more or less as a community program/rec center for kids and adults and they too have plans to construct a new facility at the corner of 4th and N Sts, two blocks away. It seems the community is set to become a cluster of rec centers In my opinion the community space that will be available exceeds the demand. And whats wrong with playground/park they way it is? It seems to be in pretty decent shape.
And I think the name Joyce chose to represent her group’s interest "the Concerned Coalition for the New York Avenue Playground" is a little deceiving as it appears they support the development of this space.

as far as I know no one supports building on green space.

too many rec centers, day care centers, pediatric day care centers, northwest settlement day care, hoagie day care, CVS day care, perry school day care oh and dont forget the taj mahal pf day care Safe Shores.

the buildings have no aesthetic value are cheap, tacky and should be demolished.

On another note, does the park fall within the boundaries of Ward 6 or 5?

the park is ward 5. our historic district was so disrespected when the democrats on council created the current ward boundaries it appears they didnt know what they were doing. we have 3 police districts, 3 ward council members.

it certainly makes for a huge challenge. the next redistricting is going to be interesting and I hope the community will be able to weigh in.
scott you are right, there was basicly a laundry list of possibilities thrown out there for consideration, some realistic, others less so. But the object is to improve or replace whats there but hopefully in the context of whats coming in northwest one so we dont have redundancy. also the community has to be involved which reminds me I have a survey to post :) there are no official plans for building, there is no money. but someday there might be and it would be nice to maximize a neighborhood resource according to what the neighbors want. its distinctly evident no one wants to build on the green space at all & if joyce herself isnt clear about that, well we can just ask her. we will be talking abut this again in september hopefully. In the meantime please sound off on what you all want there.
Personally Im happy about the new basketball court & playground but the little daycare building needs attention and the "interim" library from the 70's has got to go. Its a bum magnet. I like Joyce's focus on intergenerational activity, it would be great to have this be a place where everyone from kids to seniors can come & have something to do. but it doesnt necessarily have to be complicated with big new buldings and programming. (its an HD, it has to stay small) i hope we can initially focus on enhancing the attractiveness of the space, it really is a lovely spot. sorry for the ramble...i'll get the survey up soon.

you cant force seniors to leave the comfort of their safety with crime out of control like it is. many seniors i know like to be home by 3 pm to avoid the nasty disrespectful children who verbally assault them. dont believe me? ask seniors.
