The eagerly awaited 5th Street Hardware store is opening next week. I walked by tonight and snapped some photos with the camera on my phone. Welcome to the neighborhood 5th St. Hardware!

A look inside the doors. At the top of the photo you can see the second story of the store.

The windows are covered up.
The roadwork on the 400 block of L is almost complete and looks great.

Taken from the northern corner of 4th and L.

Looks like the shop opened today! There were people milling about inside and going up and down the steps.

I stopped by the new store yesterday afternoon right after lunch and was pleased with how large the store is (compared to the one at Logan) and how helpful the clerk was (which was always the case at Logan as well). I was in and out quickly and walked back to N Street. Welcome to the neighborhood!
My only suggestion would be that the employees who are stocking the shelves or inventoring merchandise remember that there are customers around them looking at merchandise (don't treat us like we're in your way) and that they need to be careful of the subject matter of their conversations at all times.

Missing text!!!
Three weeks... or about 22 days. (I've only added one day for optimism, but it may be more?!)

That would be awesome and beats the Sep 16 opening I've heard elsewhere.
We should start up a game of Safeway Opening Date Bingo! ;)

@6
I can't see how they'd possibly be ready to open in three weeks. I've peered inside and other than the one "Welcome to Safeway" sign it's still mostly exposed cinder block walls and concrete floors. My guess is that Safeway will need more than 22 days beyond completion of the construction simply to stock shelves and train staff. Still crossing my fingers for September... =)

Hey, that's just what the guys said after I asked.
You're just seeing the main entrance to the store, which is still showing its concrete block wall for some reason. The rest of the walls are done as is the back of the store. The store is more massive that it appears when the lights go out. Look back to the wall where it says "Serving Washington since..." in the day or on a night they leave the lights on.
As for the wood floors, I suspect that this store will be much like the local Safeways and Vons... with the wood look vinyl tile floors.
