Latest on ShotSpotter / Crime Cameras

The Examiner reports today that MPD plans to integrate crime cameras with ShotSpotter technology, a combination that will provide almost immediate video footage of areas following gunfire.  According to MPD, crime cameras have “captured valuable information in 144 crimes, including 10 homicides.”  In addition, ShotSpotter, which is currently installed in Southeast, "has been used over 17 months to recover 10 weapons and make eight arrests, including a man accused of killing a landscaper working in Anacostia in October 2006."  MPD has pledged to install ShotSpotter in the Shaw and Mount Vernon Square neighborhoods within the month and a letter from CFO Natwar Gandhi confirms that funding is now available to move forward, despite the Distict's delayed annual audit.
