Is it time to get rid of the big green signs?

I've posted a discussion on my blog asking whether it is time to get rid of the big green traffic signs along New York Avenue NW, which was suggested to me by a Yale Loft resident last week.  The idea is to help reduce the perception among drivers that New York Avenue is a freeway and hopefully they may slow down a bit.  I would have posted the entry to this site, but I've had trouble uploading photographs here.

MVSNA is continuing to push the DC government to move forward on our recommendations for improving pedestrian safety, particularly focusing on the 400 Block of New York Avenue NW, and this is another element to add to the mix.

What do you think?

Getting rid of those signs would be awesome. Of course, I'm biased since I can see them from all of my front windows. I think Cary makes a good point that there are many other entryways to 295, 395, etc. in the city that are marked with the small signs, so it seems reasonable to use those here as well.

Also get rid of the "temporary" electric sign by the police station that warns drivers of Covention Center traffic/pedestrians ahead. It's pretty ugly and not very effective. If DC timed the lights to provide more crossing time, made crosswalks more prominent, etc., it would better serve the pedestrians than that sign.

there has to be a better way. with GPS devices standardization the huge signs will become obsolete

The signs are appropriate for a freeway. They are inappropriate for city streets. (Drivers seem to find the other entrances to the interstate, such as the 9th Street tunnel at Constitution, without these oversized "you-should-be-driving-65-mph" signs.) If this is to become a "neighborhood," the big green monster signs at NY and 4th have to go (as do those at 3rd and H).

I couldn't agree more! I would (for a number of reasons) support the removal of the signs. They send the wrong idea re: NY Ave being a highway, they look terrible & they don't belong in a neighborhood.
