December MVSNA Meeting

The Good Libations singles ban exemption and the Douglas Development design of properties along the 600 block of NY Ave were discussed tonight. I hope that everyone can agree that no one has a monopoly on reason with respect to issues like the singles ban. There are just competing priorities.

Here are the notes. (http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dd43xvtr_41fb2hsdfb)

What's the deal with the Ruppert properties? Jemal couldn't get financing to even purchase them? That doesn't bode well for the project as a whole, if you can't even close on individual properties.

Mr. Millstein said in the previous meeting essentially that the financial climate was awful but they were going to push ahead with the project now with what they have and basicly hope that things get more favorable. (or they could sell something!) I'm not sure if finances are the reason the Ruppert properties are in flux, maybe they are still negotiating? That part was unclear..

I don't understand your comment about the single ban Si. But since your part of the neighborhood is going to be supplying the continuing street alcoholism in my part of the neighborhood only blocks away, how are you going to have Good Libations solve that -- or are you only concerned about the folks on that block? Also, can any VA weaken a council ordinance? I thought they could only strengthen them. I think this whole discussion is likely just an exercise and the singles ban will hold because it was council legislation.

JRG, I'm not sure what comment you were reacting to from Si - she was discussing the Douglas Development proposal. The single ban legislation includes a provison for exemptions, which provides specific criteria, one of which is community support (others are ABRA violations, police reports, level of involvement in the neighborhood). The legislation is the reason why MVSNA had to consider Good Libation's request for an exemption in the first place.

Good Libations has an unblemished track record, its management is active in the neighborhood, and its owner lives blocks away. Unlike stores south of NY Avenue, it has never, under its current ownership, sold any cheap "hobo brews" or any 12 or 16 oz cans. To my knowledge, it has never had a complaint under its current ownership had a police issue, loitering, or trash. The exemption supported by the MVSNA membership vote is for a one-year period during which we will evaluate whether any of the speculation comes to fruition about whether the corner of 5th and M is suddenly plagued with people coming up from Subway and Chinatown Market to purchase at Good Libations, or, also unacceptable is if they buy beer and head back down to drink in the parks or on the corners south of New York Ave. After 1 year, MVSNA would need to reauthorize the exemption.

or they could walk from a park on the northside of 5th and M and go back to the "chris crowder" park on N St and suck em up while planning the next sick up

So the guys that are drinking at 5th and K are all drinking Guiness, Sappora, and the craft Belgian beers because that is all that that Good Libations sells in single cans.
