Zoned Parking

Is UHOP ever going to be a good neighbor and give us advance notice of their events.  I have mentioned a possible need for weekend zoned parking in the past and after this weekend I'm bringing up the subject again.

What was going on there? Where is parking enforcement? I have never seen it this bad since the Convention Center opened. I find it odd that parking enforcement is nowhere to be found. Jesus would have taken Metro.

I did see parking enforcement on Saturday at approximately 2:30 to 3 pm at the corner of 6th and M. She had given out quite a few tickets on M St and 6th. I wouldn't blame just UHOP, I believe it was a combination of the Convention Center and the church having some sort of event.

I'm blaming UHOP for not giving advance notice. We don't have any parking enforcement on the weekend because most streets East of 6th do not have weekend zoned parking. My original point was to get opinions for additional zoned parking.

Weekend zoned parking would be a good idea for the area around the convention center except that the city needs to come up with a better visitor parking system first. It would be nice if each resident could pay a small fee to get 1 plastic tag per household that they can give to visitors, contractors, housekeepers, child care providers or others who are regularly in the neighborhood for more than 2 hours, whether it be on weekends or weekdays, to hang on their rear view mirror. Now, the only choice is to trek down to the police station for a visitor pass, but that is only worthwhile if someone is staying for a week. This is an issue around the city. I wonder how other areas handle this... I may do some research and start a separate discussion on this topic.

When the city was planning for parking around the new Nationals stadium, they conducted extensive traffic studies and developed a performance parking system for the areas around the stadium. With respect to the convention center, our neighborhood is not affected as often as the 81 home games each year at the baseball stadium-- most conventions bring in out of town visitors that don't have cars. But there are around two dozen times a year that local-oriented events (green festival, car show, etc.) SIGNIFICANTLY impact parking in our neighborhood, and it seems people are able to park where ever they desire without consequence. I'd like to see a comprehensive approach to parking for these kinds of events to include proactive engagement between the convention center and the community, and enforcement of regulations during events. If we can do it for the baseball games, we can do it for conventions. With the inauguration balls coming in two months time, we can expect streets around the convention center to be shut down and neighborhood streets to be inundated with cars looking for parking. Perhaps we can improve on the fiasco from four years ago.

Check out Capitol Hill. I used to enjoy going to Barracks Row on the hill to eat on Friday evenings. It was shared Zoned 2 and Zone 6. Now it's Zone 6 only on the odd sides of the street and 2 hrs of parking for everyone on the even sides of the block. Not only is this enforced but if you park too close to the corner or your tires are not facing the curb you will get a ticket.
