From neighbor Dick Munn: Most people want to “age-in-place” or remain in their homes as they age. Grassroots organizations called “Villages” are emerging in communities across the country to help make this a viable option. Villages help people remain safely and comfortably at home – and socially connected to their neighborhoods – even as their physical needs change. The first Village, Beacon Hill in Boston, was founded in 2001. It served as a model for neighborhood organizers in the District of Columbia. The six Villages operating in the District offer a myriad of services to make living activities easier for people as they age. Transportation to such places as doctor appointments, grocery store, pharmacy is one of the main services. Meal preparation and delivery, light home maintenance, help with computers, the Internet or electronic devices, help with running errands are a few more. Other services are removal of leaves in the fall, and snow in the winter, record keeping, filling out forms, and tending to plants, helping with pets. Villages offer a center of information for cultural and physical activities shared by others. Most of these services are performed by corps of volunteers living in the neighborhood. For other services the Village provides access to vetted local service providers. For more information about the Village concept, visit the Village to Village Network, http://www.vtvnetwork.org/ and For information about Villages in Washington DC. Anyone in the Mount Vernon Square neighborhood who is interested in becoming part of a Village, please contact Dick Munn at 202-393-3493, or email
What a great facility for kids and families in Shaw and local Mt Vernon Sq. Having more eyes on the street should help to prevent crime on the streets (or lead to more crime reports) around this area with all of the local #ShawWard6 and Ward5 residents in the area who will be stopping by to let their four legged family members run free off leash in a safe and securely closed enclosed area. from Prince of Petworth: http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2012/02/new-dog-park-coming-to-4th-and-p-st-nw-in-bundy-park/ New Dog Park Coming to 4th and P St, NW in Bundy Park

454N St NwI had inquired about the status of 454 N St NW . After several phone calls a the project manager from DHCD called this AM to say that they finally have the necessary approvals to go ahead with work on the building. An MOU needs to be signed the project manager is optimistic that will happen and constuction will begin by the end of the month. The manager said she has been working on this for three years and doesn't really know why it took so long but that plans were lost a couple of times.I think the DC Government should use this as a case study to determine what the bottlenecks are in their business processes and take action to correct them. Not likely to happen but worth suggesting .

DC Councilmember Jack Evans' current Evans2012 campaign advisor Tom Lindfeld is applying to bring a Medical Marijuana Dispensary to 1539 7th St NW in Shaw -- a neighborhood which is now a part of Ward 6 DC Councilmember Tommy Wells' portfolio. The Compassion Centers of America LLC (application pdf attached courtesy of EastShawDC) represents three partners: Tom Lindfeld of Washington DC, Chris Gard of Alameda California, and Justin Jarin of Alameda California, has completed an application to create a medical marijuana dispensary to be located in Mr Lindfeld's property at 1539 7th Street NW, Washington DC, 20001.
ANC2C02 Commissioner Kevin Chapple's community meeting to discuss the general regulations concerning medican marijuana dispensaries set for this evening, was cancelled. But I certainly hope that Commissioner Kevin Chapple intends to invite Mr Lindfeld and his partners and Councilmember Evans to meeting rescheduled for7pm-9pm, Friday, February 17, 2012. I hope Commissioner Chapple will also disclose whether or not he has already had private meetings with Mr Lindeld, his partners, or Councilmember Evans about this proposal which has caused quite an uproar of differing opinions on the subject on the ShawListserv. Commissioner Chapple has not responded to several requests to reveal the owner of the proposed site or the applicant(s) for the facility in his single member district, but it is difficult to imagine that since this application, submitted to the District's Department of Health on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 has not been presented to Chapple or then-Shaw/Ward2 DC Councilmember Jack Evans. Evans has also failed to respond to requests for information about the proposal presented by his campaign advisor.
