I usually sleep through the fireworks and the gun shots and the shattering glass, but last night at about 2:15 a.m., I awoke to the sound of what I think might have been a gun shot. Did anyone else hear it or know what happened? Thanks.

I should add that I live on M between 4th and 5th, and the noise sounded like it came from that area.

I heard it . Someone has been shooting off 1 or 2 fireworks off. I've seen one going up. It has been happening for a few weeks now. It is a rocket or something. It seems to be coming from N or O between 4th and 5th.

Yes someone was shot, two people actually. I can't believe this would happen in Mount Vernon, right outside of the Belvedere.

Actually, Elliot Plack at 10/13/08 8:12PM was referring to the Mount Vernon neighborhood in Baltimore, where there is a Belvedere Hotel. I guess he's got this blog mixed up with a Baltimore blog.

I heard it too, sounded like 1 shot at about 2:05am. called 911 and heard the police within about 30 seconds. a couple nights earlier we heard loud bangs but those were definitely firecrackers.

Has anyone seen any data on what shotspotter is finding? Should we put in a polite request for info working up the chain of command from MPO Barnes and Lt. Pate (has anyone seen either of them lately?), to Commander Kucik, and then to Asst. Chief Groomes? If necessary, and hopefully it is not, then we can file a FOIA. It would be interesting to know if the gunfire has increased, decreased, or stayed the same since shotspotter's installation, where the hot spots are for the shootings, and how deployment has changed in response.
I'm very concerned about our safety. I've sadly reached a level of being "used to" the gunshots, but after the recent murders of 26-year-old Tony Hunter as he was going to BeBar at 8th and N a month ago and now 40-year-old Delfa Hercules who was waiting at a bus stop at 3rd and R on Friday when she was robbed, I'm about at my wits end because its becoming more random and a little too close to home.

Mayor Fenty, Councilmembers Evans and Wells will be at the DNA meeting tonight beginning at 6:30 pm at the Calvery Baptist Church. Safety is one of the topics to be discussed. Come and hear what they have to say and express our concerns.

The fireworks having been going off for a while now. First time we heard them we were really concerned...until we saw the shells on the sidewalk. I think it was another M80 or something on those lines that was set off again the other night around 2. We usually can see the smoke rising into the air. The worst part is that its happening right in front of 440 N Street. Not sure if its someone trying to make trouble for the people living there, it sure sucks to wake up to it. We live next door. So much for leaving windows open for the FREE cool air. I'm hoping that whoever keeps setting these off run out ASAP.

cary, what was the cost of that shotspotter or did it cost nothing because it came from a federal grant?

Richard, $1.8 million. The Mayor's press release is below. I remember hearing something about a federal grant paying for at least some of the cost, but could not find evidence of that online.
Mayor Fenty and Chief Lanier Increase Public Safety Efforts
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced today that the Metropolitan Police Department has increased its efforts to improve public safety in the District.
Shotspotter
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has expanded the Shotspotter (Shotspotter) Gun Location System into Ward Two and the Third District. The expansion now allows the MPD to hear gunshots over an 11 mile square radius in the Third, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Police Districts combined.
Shotspotter senses the sound of gunfire within a defined geographical area, and so for this year has recorded more than 4,500 gunshots. It has been used as a tool in a total of 13 homicides.
Shotspotter was first deployed and tested in the Seventh District in August of 2006. It was deployed into the Fifth and Sixth Districts in March of this year. The expansion of Shotspotter is a result of $1.8 million allocated by Mayor Fenty and approved by the City Council in April of this year.
