A few weeks ago my roommate mentioned she saw someone posted on here they work for Bread in the City and are willing to take donations in. I am moving overseas in a few months and have begun my purge and I have about 10 race t-shirts, most brand new, I would like to donate. I know its not much, but I would prefer giving to a charity than just a thrift shop. I have donated to Bread in the City before but I don't think the one in NW is accepting regular donations anymore, and I am often not home during the donation times. I also do not own a car. Would the person who works there mind identifying themselves again and let me know how I can donate. Or if anyone else has good ideas let me know.

The organization is called Bread for the City (www.breadforthecity.org) and they are a fantastic organization; I have volunteered with them several times, including with their job skills program. The director of food and clothing at the 7th Street location is Ted Pringle, 202-386-7011, tpringle@breadforthecity.org Be sure to pick up a tax receipt for your donation.

According to the website, which I have been to before, Bread for the City does not accept donations at the NW location. Only at the SE location. And only during daytime hours during the week. I am not trying to be lazy here, but I do not own a car and I cannot leave my job during the day to take donations. I'm not concerned about the tax receipt - I have donated used items frequently but I don't itemize my taxes or earn enough to warrant it. I just want to find a good place to donate some new or fairly new shirts.

Along the same line - I have some paint that I would rather see put to good use than taking it for hazardous waste disposal.
I was doing some painting and made a mistake when I bought some paint. I have a full, unopened gallon of Benjamin Moore "Aura" paint, with a satin finish, in a very neutral color (jute). The Benj. Moore satin finish is actually quite glossy (which is what my mistake was - too glossy for my living room) so would be good for a more heavily traveled spot. I also have about half a gallon of the satin paint in a darker, smoky-purple color (tempest, on Benj. Moore's website) that works with the jute as an accent wall.
I't's really good quality paint and I hate to see it go to waste. So, I am wondering if either of you know of any community organizations (or schools or homes, etc.), or anybody for that matter, that might be able to use it (or at least the full gallon of the jute).

Hi Tamara and Michelle,
Sorry for the delay writing back, and thanks for thinking of us. We're in the process of updating our website for the holidays, and we are accepting clothing donations in the Northwest Center. We're at 1525 7th Street NW (off the corner of 7th and P NW), and we can accept donations between 9am and 5pm Monday through Friday. During the month of November, I'll also be at the NW site on Saturday mornings and I can accept clothing donations then, too. If that's more convenient, just send me an email at msiemer [at] breadforthecity [dot] org and we'll work out a time.
As far as paint goes, Greater DC Cares and A Wider Circle are very good organizations that can typically put stuff like that to good use.
Thanks again, and special thank you to Katherine for the nice words!

Matt - Thanks for the info and for your work at Bread for the City. I'll see if I can get up there on a Saturday. As I prepare to pack up my life here I am even running out of those. But I may also come up with more to donate.
As to the comment about Galbraith church - I've been here over 3 years and most of the time it seems to be closed and they request donations not be left outside.
