Public Hearing on Nuisance Property Bill

I'm not sure if you're satisfied with DCRA's work on identifying vacant property or if you hold the opinon that more should be done appropriately tax vacant properties . . .  either way, Councilmembers Mary Cheh and Jack Evans are holding a public hearing at which the public can submit written testimony or testify orally in person.

thanks for posting this. if i am not mistaken this is the legislation pending that will make the new rules that were passed last year on an emergency basis permanent. for example it cuts down the exemptions for vacant property and streamlines the identification & taxation process. we discussed this last night at the MVSNA meeting also & it seems like dcra is making some headway. we shall have to help them out. we have until June 7th to submit written testimony - click the link provided for the info.

Hello Shiloh...

true Si, but I'm all for beefing up the legislation. for example, properties declared vacant/nuisance should automatically waive liability for DPW to remove graffiti. as it stands now, tax-avading vacant property owners have to give DPW permission to abate graffiti from their private property. why would someone who neglects to maintain their property actively seek to give permission for graffiti to be removed?

anecdotally, about 40% of my service request to DPW come back with comments "private property - unable to locate owner."

i think the graffiti waiver for vacant properties should be "opt-out" rather than "opt-in" as the case is now.
