6th & N Park Meeting 1/9/07

Reminder that there is a meeting to discuss renovation plans for the park on N Street between 6th & 7th.  ANC 2C voted in October to support the sale of this park to United House of Prayer.  Meeting notes here.  More commentary at Slum Historique...

From ANC 2C Commissioner Alex Padro:

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation has rescheduled the public meeting to discuss proposed improvements to the pocket park located on the south side of the 600 block of N Street, NW.  The meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at 6:30 PM  at the Kennedy Recreation Center, 1401 7th Street, NW.  Staff from DPR’s Planning and Capital divisions will be present to talk with community members.

The park in question is adjacent to the alley where Shaw activist Christopher Crowder was killed last July.  Crowder's homicide remains unsolved.  Neighborhood residents have called for this park to be upgraded and better maintained by the Department of Parks and Recreation.  Some neighbors have suggested this might be a good location for a dog park.  ANC 2C voted last fall to endorse the sale of the property to United House of Prayer for all People for housing development, which I oppose, since once you lose green space and play space, you never get it back.

If you are concerned about ensuring the continued availability of greenspace, open space, and playspaces in our neighborhood, I urge you to attend this meeting on Tuesday night and have your voice heard.

I agree with Alex that it would be terrible to lose this green space.

Why are UHoP's efforts focused on this land? Can we work with them to find another property in the neihgborhood for their project?

This parcel is essential if they are ever going to redo the entire church/mixed use partnership with HR. HR is drooling over the development potential along 7th St and the money from the below grade convention center parking.

UHOP owns more property around here than many realize. Someone should list their inventory on this blog.

Wow. Somebody should read that list at the meeting.

Posted By Don / At 1/9/07 2:56 PM
good lord! are they good stewards of such properties or are they like Shiloh Baptist Church?

Posted By Shaw Rez / At 1/9/07 3:49 PM
From that list, they sure own alot of the 1300 block of 5th and 6th streets nw. I wonder what they have in mind for that historic free block?

It's quite a stretch to call this parcel "green space" since it's basically a concrete wasteland attractive only to druggers. It clearly is no place for a dog park--for a number of reasons.

I basically oppose further acquisition of property by churches around here, but the city sure as hell hasn't done anything to maintain or patrol this "parkland." And UHOP at least takes good care of its property. I suspect they'd do more to monitor the property than the city will, and would probably do more to develop it as an asset. So I'm ambivalent.

UHOPFAP builds some pug-ugly buildings but they are generally good stewards of their property. They are well maintained and when tenants mess up with "complicated lives," they are booted out. They rent mainly to church members.

My gripe with them is the sense of entitlement they maintain to city property. They acquired the half-block northeast of the Convention Center for a buck ($1.00!) during the Barry regime. The merchants on the 1700 block of 9th Street, who survived the vicisitudes of subway construction, were kicked out by the UHOPFAP by the city invoking public domain. This church/state relationship built most of the subsidized housing in the neighborhood after the arson and looting of 1968. They will scream bloody murder if the "gentrifiers" go after the 8th and N parcel, which, I agree with Dave, would make a lousy dog park. They assumed the rights to the 6th and N property without soliciting any discussion from residents in the ANC.

1. fix the lights

Does this list include properties owned by the Madisons as private individuals? The United House of Prayer (charitable, tax exempt) exerts itself vigorously on their personal behalf, and the result is that they profiteer off the gullibility of their parishioners without lifting a finger. This religion racket is a wonderful thing if you know how to work the angles.

Also not listed is either #9 or is it #11 Logan Circle. The huge single family mansion that was home for Daddy Grace and is currently the UHOP Museum. It's an elegant Logan Circle origional.

11 logan is buried in that list of over 100 but I cant tell you for sure if others are missing. honey, I dont have that kind of time, not this week :)

Anyway, the church is rich as hell, especially the upper echolons, and it is supported by your tax dollars, and every Sunday the parishoners come in from the suburbs in their fancy cars, clog up the streets, and go to their church to first and foremost thank god they don't live in the neighborhood or have to do a damn thing for it or for the miserable people living nearby who have to turn to drugs and prostitution to get through life. It's self-congratulation in its worst form and on a biblical scale.

i had to work until 8 last night and unable to attend the meeting. did any of you all?

Posted By richard / At 1/10/07 8:36 PM
I did. long story short, DPR has gotten the money for short term improvements: lights, iron fence (to be locked at night), and fixing the tennis/b-ball court. They have requested FY08 money for long term improvements and wanted to start getting an idea of what to put there. As usual there was vocal opposition to a "poop park" and most of the discussion was about dogs & United House of Prayer wanting to buy the park. ANC 2C Commissioner Doris Brooks and other UHOP residents/parishioners tried to assert that the site is not a park and UHOP will build affordable housing. 2 UHOP representatives were present, property manager Brenda Hall & a Deacon - his name escapes me. They did not commit to any plan for the land, they just stated that they are interested in acquiring it. DPR suggested that UHOP "adopt" the park (basicly pay for improving it). I dont think there was any response to this. Surprisingly there was opposition when a resident volunteered to spend her weekend cleaning and planting...all in all we have a commitment for the major fixes in a specific timeframe 90-120 days, which is great. DPR also informed me after the meeting that the purchase order for the lights at NJ & O park went thru a month ago and we should see action any day. I know we have heard many promises from DPR but we have a new director, Wanda Durden, who I hope will come thru for Shaw.

Richard I was looking for you on the G2 which was 20 MIN LATE!

Posted By si kailian / At 1/10/07 10:59 PM
Si
oh i know the G2 can be late and soon it could be even later as roadwork is about to begin on P St from 20th to 22nd St nw.
btw, the 3rd Day plant store on the corner of 20th and P is bu-bye.

the online bus time tables are more accurate than those posted at the bus stops. overall, the G2 works great for my purposes. i get the $11.00 per week unlimited pass, can hop on or off at freshfields, transfer to other routes, errands at dupont circle, shop at 2nd story books, do all sorts of things without having to find parking. somebody smart said why dont you walk. like i'm gonna walk to 35th and O every morning! and then back at night?

good to know there's new leadership at DPR. now jonetta and others will have to find another agency to 'pick-on' :-X

Posted By richard / At 1/11/07 8:05 AM
I'm sure jonetta will find someone :)
the hardware store is going too, law firm taking over the whole space.

I beg to differ. Yes, UHOP are good stewarts yes but maintianing the property outside and maintianing the proerty inside are two totally different things...

I have heard that the light in one of their "so called" senior developments has been out for days and is pitch black upon entering the building -- endangering the safety of motor challenged seniors as well as opening up a window to crime...not to mention mainainence of the facility has reportedly come from hiring of High School Graduates/members of UHOP with no formal training...often times seniors complaints go unresolved for months and sometimes even years...

I don't support or oppose the aquisition of the space by UHOP -- as long as it is reconstructed as a play area and residents don't feel like they have to break into the space to enjoy recreational time as they had to do at the Kennedy Recreation Center on Sunday when the facility is not open...HOW RUDE!!! How does DC define Public Space???

All I know is the concrete wasteland on 6th and N Streets used to be a wonderful play area and the CITY has been neglectful of this space so aren't they the ones we need to hold responsilbe for renovations...

I just hope it doesn't take the reaminder of my lifetime to see it completed...
(excuse typos - im rushing)
