Safeway
Ok, I know I can't be the only one having some issues with the new Safeway. First let me say that I am SUPER excited about having this brand new grocery store in our neighborhood, and no matter what they do, they can't reach the lows of the existing Giant or Safeway stores.
But....the store hasn't had circulars one time that I went in during the past 5-6 weeks. Annoying yes, but it wouldn't be such a big issue if the store actually labeled the sale items correctly. I've been caught at the register overcharged, but unable to reference the flyer. This past week, they didn't even have circulars at the register and the one check out lady who had a flyer indicated that she had to buy the newspaper to get it (she kept it safely tucked in her back pocket). When I've brought this up to Customer Service, they've given nothing but attitude or acted like they just ran out that morning. That excuse doesn't work for weeks on end.
Another larger issue, is the fact that we have consistently (as in literally every week) been overcharged and had to return to customer service for refunds. One week they had to refund me $35. Not one time did I see or hear of anyone fixing the pricing in the system so that this would not affect other customers. More than once I've returned later in the week and still been overcharged for the same item. How many people are not noticing this and how much $$$ is Safeway making off of the overcharging? Please beware of this and check your receipts diligently.
My last rant (I promise) is the stocking - can't they find a way not to run out of chicken, 1/2 gallons of milk and Yeungling every week???
I've brought these issues up to management, who have indicated that more than one Safeway manager had been put on suspension, as corporate doesn't feel that the store is up to par. Please - if you are having the same issues, bring them up to management so that this store doesn't slip into the state that the rest of the stores in our neighborhood (just look at what was once a new Giant at 8th & O).
This just received from Commissioner Alex Padro... It is already noticeable that Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2C is under new management. Looks to be a marathon meeting that will establish the structure and focus of the year ahead with a return to some longstanding matters (the computer grants are back).

Around 1:45 PM I was the lucky recipient of a brick being thrown at the back of my building breaking the glass. I couldn't take a picture fast enough, but luckily some neighbors were able to identify the car and tags. Police report filed etc. The sad part was that it took the police over 50 minutes to respond and of course the car with the kids were obviously already gone. Turns out that the car was stolen and the police are on the look out for it and its occupants. After the brick hit the window it dropped down onto the car and broke the front windshield.
The tags on the Dodge silver is Virginia, KLV4356. If you see this car, please call the police and say that you want to report a "second sighting" for Case Number 182-543. I was able to see one of the kids in the car and will be able to identify if I see some pictures or if I ever see the kid agin. Something tells me that they live in the neighborhood.

News flash! Rumors are true!
The Presidential Inaugural Committee -- trumpets, please! -- is hosting 10 official balls on the night of Jan. 20.
These, ladies and gentlemen, are the only parties where Barack Obama, Joe Biden and their wives are guaranteed to appear, albeit for a quick wave and onstage dance.
Six of the balls will be held at the glamorous, escalator-studded Washington Convention Center. The other four will be at the National Building Museum, Union Station, the Washington Hilton Hotel and the D.C. Armory. A committee spokesman confirmed the locations last night.
And? AND?
The committee did not release any further information, including who will entertain, or the theme for the big night, or, most important, how to scrounge a ticket.
Which leaves desperate partygoers and Obama celebrators pretty much where they were before: grasping at crumbs. Fear not, readers. In the absence of official information, we give you informed speculation, our expert insidery tips and a road map for attending -- or for staying far away from the giddy masses.
Tickets: Don't have one? Relax -- invitations for the balls have not yet gone out. When they do, the committee will mail fat envelopes offering loyal supporters around the country a chance to purchase tickets to all the official events. The PIC has capped the top sponsorship package at $50,000, which includes four tickets to the swearing-in, the parade, one of the balls, and any other PIC-sponsored events. No word yet how much the least expensive ball tickets will sell for, or how many will be available.
Number: Despite the clamor to be part of the historic celebration, the Obama team has kept the number of balls to a manageable 10 -- the same number Ronald Reagan attended for his second inauguration in 1985.
Bill Clinton, Mr. Irrepressible, set the record with 14 balls in 1997; George W. Bush went to eight in 2001 and nine for his second go-round.
Super Tuesday: As during the primaries, lots of states will be lumped together. The balls are traditionally organized by region, so everyone from, say, all the Southwest will be placed in the same ballroom. No word yet which states will be placed at which venues -- but we promise you that every ball will be crammed to the rafters.
(A word to the wise: Tell your out-of-town buddies that scoring a ticket is just the first step. In 1997, hundreds of guests stood outside Union Station -- some without coats -- for more than two hours when D.C. fire marshals closed the doors.)
Entertainment: No clue yet, but it's not really the point, is it? Like you're going to these balls for the music? Anything in tune is frosting on the cake.
Location, location: All the balls -- except for the ones at the Hilton and Armory -- are clustered within a few blocks of each other, making it easier to secure the venues and get the president and first lady to the parties efficiently.
Ballgoers, expect the streets nearby to be blocked off for hours; expect to walk for blocks to get to the balls; and expect elaborate alternate routes if you're driving anywhere near the balls.
Better yet, stay home. But you knew that already, didn't you?

The forcast calls for some up & down temps but it will be in the teens this week some nights. If you reside in an old house with crappy insulation be careful of freezing pipes. An easy way to delay the freezing process is to keep the water in motion by leaving the faucet on at a trickle.
