7th & N Park Meeting

Good afternoon to all,

The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a meeting on October 30th at 6:30pm at Kennedy Recreation Center , 1401 7th Street, NW , to get input from the community on the kinds of improvements DPR should make to the park located on N Street, NW between 6th and 7th Streets.   The purpose of this project is to enhance the park’s appearance and amenities in order to better serve residents’ open space and recreation needs.

If you have any questions about the 6th and N Street, NW Park, please contact Tanya Washington at (202) 673-2032 or Sharon Dendy at (202) 673-7692.

Thank you!

This is the park that ANC 2C voted to support the sale to United House of Prayer at the last meeting.  While that possibility is very unclear, this park still has no lights! hope you see you all there.

only in washington dc would they need a meeting to fix lights that have been broken for years.

for real. they say the repair is in the works (like the nj ave & O park...) the meeting is also to discuss future plans for the park. I'm glad the neighbors have an opportunity to have a voice in this. We certainly dont need another parking lot.

if the lights get repaired and the tennis courts get fixed and the laws of the district of columbia are inforced there isn't a need for much more than that given the limitations of this tiny site. with all the units of housing in the immediate area there certainly is a need for a recreational park. it would be utilized if it were safe to play there.

What is the status of the proposal to sell the land to UHOP - why is there any support for this?

Let me be clarify. MVSNA has never received any proposal for the sale of this park to UHOP nor have we taken an official vote. Jack Evans indicated in an email last summer that he would try to initiate legislation to facilitate the sale of the park to UHOP but he has taken no action. At a meeting with Evans staff, Dept. of Parks & Rec., & Felicia Sullivan (who initiated an effort to get lights on & fix the park), ANC 2C Commissioner Doris Brooks told us that UHOP planned housing or parking if they were to acquire the site. At the next ANC 2C meeting, Brenda Hall, UHOP Property Manager presented the intent of UHOP to acquire the park. She indicated that UHOP did not have any concrete plans for what they would do with it. A motion was made to support the sale of the park to UHOP. During the comment period, Felicia Sullivan was gaveled out. I was not called on to comment. The vote was 3-1 in favor. MVSNA is trying to get a dialog going with UHOP.

As Richard has pointed out, the park must be deemed surplus property in order to be sold. It is not. I suspect council action would also be necessary to sell a park.

This is the park where Cris Crowder was shot & killed. It is mowed, but the lights dont work & the tennis courts have been unused for a long time. If this park is ever going to be protected and fixed up, it will take community effort. Please come on monday. Whatever happens, the community should have a voice.

why have the tennis courts not been used? how can anybody play tennis without a net and a court without lines? how many chiefs does it take to see that?
